Summers coming

It's August and it's in the 20s here today. I've just got back from a walk along the beach in a tee shirt. This am the birds were at it, the monarchs were flitting about and my wife was picking Freishas. The windows and doors are wide open as I write. Down south they are skiing and it's cold. It's the winterless north up here. That plant is a bottlebrush and those monarchs love it. They have been with us all winter. What do they do on cold days? Where do they hide out? Last question what is this thing?

We came across three lying around in the garden the other day - any ideas?

Its some kind of fungus thing I think. I have seen them on a west coast beach here and wondered. They start out life spongy and then harden up, very wierd though!
