Blood pressure too low ? increased mortality

Low Blood Pressure Linked to Increased Mortality

Unfortunately such reductions may be deleterious in precipitating cardiac events particularly in the patients with known cardiac disease. Therefore a reasonable compromise at current stage is to be cautious in lowering diastolic blood pressure below 85 mm Hg in the patients with known coronary artery disease.

No Association Between High Blood Pressure and Mortality After Age 85 Years
By the time an individual reaches the age of 85 years, high blood pressure is not a risk factor for mortality, irrespective of a history of hypertension, but blood pressure values below 140/70 mm Hg are associated with increased mortality risk, according to the latest results from the Leiden 85-plus Study, published in the Journal of Hypertension.[11]

However, in very elderly people with persistently raised blood pressure, Prof. Stott cautions, there is sufficient evidence for benefits such as reduced morbidity, including stroke, and possibly prevention of cognitive decline, to support antihypertensive treatment.]
